the softness of a flannel shirt, on the inside
the inside is lined with a yarn-dyed cotton check flannel: soft to the touch, warm, and visible as soon as you open the vest.
a light quilted vest that layers easily. its waterproof, breathable shell blocks wind and rain, and the flannel lining makes it as comfortable as a shirt.

five layers, from the outside in: two insulation layers of different weights, separated by a fabric that allows the quilting.

the shell
the outside of the vest. it blocks rain and wind while letting damp heat escape.
the outer warm layer
the thickest layer: its fibres trap warm air and keep out the cold coming from outside.
the separation layer
a light fabric between the two warm layers. the quilting is stitched through it, keeping the insulation evenly spread with no cold spots.
the inner warm layer
a second, thinner layer that keeps your body heat close to you.
the flannel
the fabric against you: a cotton check flannel, soft like a winter shirt.
